light sussex chickens
We have developed our Light Sussex breeding flock over the past three years, with a considerable investment of time and money. Our breeding birds were hatched from fertile eggs purchased from several Light Sussex breeders around Australia. We made this investment so that we would have healthy birds of high quality, pure breeding and genetic diversity.
When selling our hens as point of lay, we have chosen to wait until birds in the pen have started to lay eggs before advertising them.
Often hens are considered to be point of lay at roughly 20 weeks. However, Light Sussex hens generally don't start laying eggs until 7 - 9 months of age. We have continued to house, feed and care for these birds for the additional few months so that you can expect eggs from them shortly after you take them home. Of course, this is reflected in the price of the bird.
Laying hen (8 months) - $80.00 each
Rooster (8 months) - $30.00 each
Light Sussex are a heritage breed and an excellent dual purpose backyard chicken, laying eggs consistently and a large size which makes them suitable for meat production.
Light Sussex hens lay between 200-250 large eggs a year. Egg production will gradually begin to slow down when they are around five years old, laying less and less as they age.
They usually begin laying at around eight months old, which is later than other breeds.
Light Sussex hens are a great breed if you want eggs all year around. Unlike many other chickens, their egg laying will continue through the cold, winter months, although egg production does slow down when they are molting.
